Heroes of Might and Magic has one of the most devoted communities in strategy gaming, and almost none of what it knows is written down anywhere you can find it. The knowledge lives in private Discord servers, in forum threads a decade deep, in Telegram channels and a subreddit — and most of it assumes you already play one particular custom map or scenario setup. If you know where to look, it is all there. If you don't, there is nothing.
When Olden Era went into early access, that gap opened all over again: a game this popular, and barely anywhere to read about it. Town Portal is the answer to that — a single place where a player at any level can find what they need without having to be an insider first.
I've played this series since the first Heroes of Might and Magic. I followed the competitive scene for years and then drifted away from it — Horn of the Abyss had grown into something that asked for more study than I had to give. The love for the games never went anywhere, but the way into them got narrower.
When Olden Era was announced I went straight into the beta, mostly Arena, with some Single Hero on the side. Then early access arrived and I ran into the same wall as before. So I built the hub I wanted to use myself, on the assumption that if I needed it, other people did too.
They did. Daily visits climbed faster than I expected, and at that point I decided to work on this every day rather than when I felt like it. I think Olden Era reaches a hundred thousand daily players, and I would like the reference material to already be there when it does.
Town Portal is run by one person. That means it moves quickly and it also means mistakes are mine — if you find one, tell me and I will fix it.
This project is made out of affection for the series and respect for the people who build things around it. Content creators, streamers, tournament organisers and players at every level of skill — the scene exists because of them, and a site like this one is downstream of their work, not above it.
So the editorial line is simple: no drama. No pile-ons, no manufactured controversy, no ranking people in order to have something to argue about. Plenty of places on the internet will do that for you. This is not one of them.
If you make Olden Era content and want to work together, I would like to hear from you. A good deal of what is on this site exists because a player or a streamer took the time to explain something properly.
Other games solved this problem long ago. Wowhead, Icy Veins, Maxroll, Dotabuff, Neoseeker, Fextralife and HSReplay all took a scattered community and gave it somewhere to stand — a place where the data is reliable, the guides are maintained, and a new player is not treated as a nuisance.
Olden Era deserves the same thing. That is the bar Town Portal is built against, and it is a long way from cleared yet.
